CLASS 3

What Will My Child Be Studying in Autumn 2007

Literacy: To begin with we will be working on The Twits by Roald Dahl; this will help us to explore character, setting and dialogue as a basis for our own writing. We will be learning to use speech marks when using dialogue. We will also research non-fiction texts about Egypt, read and write poems and look at play scripts.  We will be particularly concentrating on handwriting, spelling and punctuation to start the year.

ICT: We will be working on combining text and graphics using Word, Publisher and Textease, to produce Topic covers and fact sheets. We will also use the internet and CD Roms to find information.

Science: Mrs Lowrie will be teaching Science on Wednesday mornings. The work will involve a lot of practical investigation.

R.E/PSHE/Citizenship: We will be starting the year thinking about rules in our school and beyond and then moving on to Harvest, All Saints Day and then Christmas!  We will also be looking at the stories of Joseph and Moses in the Old Testament, due to their Egyptian links.

Numeracy: We will be following the National Numeracy Strategy for Yrs 3 and 4 and much of our work will be done in groups. There will be an emphasis on mental maths to help us become more efficient at calculations. We will focus on addition, subtraction, measures and shapes before half term and include multiplication, division and fractions after half term.

History Topic: This term we are learning about the Ancient Egyptians. We will find out about aspects of everyday life such as work and farming. We will explore the life of the Pharaohs and of course life after death, mummies, tombs and so forth! We will look closely at artefacts to see what they can tell us about the past. We will be linking this topic into lots of our work in other subjects, particularly art.

PE: In games we are working on different ball skills to put into invasion games. In gym we will be exploring symmetrical and asymmetrical balance. In dance we will be learning some traditional English country dances.

Art: Much of our art work will link to our Egyptian topic. We will be developing our sketching skills as well as a using a range of media to explore designs. We will look at how relationships were portrayed in tomb paintings.

Music: We will be following a unit called Animal Magic, which looks at how sounds can be used to describe animals. After half term we will be trying some Egyptian drumming.

French: The children will be learning French with Mrs Shackleton. Please encourage them to share what they have learnt.
