CLASS 5

What will my Class 5 child be studying in the Autumn Term 2007?

Literacy  We will be developing our skills through Biography, Journalism, Media, Story writing, Reports and Poetry.  We will be linking work on plays with our Tudor topic.  We will be concentrating on handwriting and punctuation to start the year and there will be lots of reading and talking about books

ICT Our Tudor work will be a good starting point for our work on multimedia presentations and we will need to revise our word processing skills as well.

Homework  Mrs. Hellen's work is handed in on Tuesday and Mrs. Warrens’s is handed in on Thursday.  Expectations for homework will be high, and set according to the child’s ability.

Science Mrs Lowry will be teaching Science on Wednesday afternoons and will cover a large variety of topics including forces, friction, sound and lots of experimental and investigative work.  When set, Homework for Mrs Lowry needs to be handed in on Wednesday mornings.

Technology This will link to our main topic and will be about Bread – the staple food of the Tudors – we may also be doing some pie tasting!  There will be considerable overlap with Art.

R.E/PSHE/Citizenship We will be starting the year thinking about rules in our school and beyond and then moving on to Harvest, All Saints Day and then Christmas!

Numeracy We will be following the National Numeracy Strategy for Yrs 5 and 6 and much of our work will be done in groups.  There will be an emphasis on mental maths and lots of tables!  We will focus on multiplication, division, fractions and data this term.

History Topic Our topic this term will be about the Tudors, their personalities and the consequences of their actions.  We will also be finding out about historical artifacts and what they can tell us about the past.   We will be linking this topic into lots of our work in other subjects, including Literacy, Art, Technology and ICT.   We hope to arrange a visit to tie into this topic later in the term.

Art Much of our artwork will link to our Tudor topic.  We will be extending our skills in a number of media including clay and silk painting.  We will be studying Holbein’s picture of The Ambassadors, and creating our own work inspired by this picture.

Educational Visits We will be visiting Ely Cathedral in October and taking part in a musical workshop linked to the theme of the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade.

PE Kit will be needed on Thursday and Friday, but should be in school every day. Mrs Warren will be teaching PE this year.

Music With lots of good singers in the class, we will be extending our singing skills, listening to Tudor music and making some of our own, as well as looking at the instruments that the Tudors used.
