Learning about Florence Nightingale
Florence Nightingale’s work during the Crimean War earned her the well-deserved honour of being considered the mother of modern nursing. Less well recognised, however, is her involvement with the development of nutritional services for the military. So today, the children in Squirrel Class researched the impact of Florence Nightingale’s methods and explored the importance of good nutrition as an aid to recovery in hospital patients. Over the course of the day, the children worked together to make a delicious vegetable soup for everyone to enjoy. To accompany the soup, was freshly baked soda bread - again, made by the children. Just like Florence, they ensured food preparation areas were kept scrupulously clean and that all notes were recorded meticulously, too!
